If you are searching for a welcoming place for families in Clarkston Michigan, Little Roots Play Café is one of the most special spaces in Oakland County.
Owned by Chelsea Henderson, Little Roots was created with a clear purpose. It offers a calm and thoughtful environment where children can explore while parents connect and feel supported.
As a motherhood photographer and birth doula serving Metro Detroit and Oakland County, I am always drawn to businesses created by mothers for other mothers. When Chelsea opened Little Roots, it quickly became one of those spaces that felt deeply aligned with the kind of community I love documenting.
Over time I have had the opportunity to photograph the space, capture special events, and document the beautiful moments that naturally unfold inside the café.

Little Roots Play Café in Clarkston Michigan is more than just an indoor play space.
Chelsea designed the environment intentionally so it feels calm, welcoming, and supportive for both children and parents. Instead of loud and overstimulating play areas, Little Roots focuses on creating a space where children can play freely while caregivers can slow down and enjoy the moment.
The café includes
• open ended play areas for toddlers and young children
• thoughtfully chosen toys and materials that encourage imagination
• cozy seating for parents
• a warm environment that encourages connection between families
It is the kind of place where children feel comfortable exploring and parents feel comfortable staying awhile.

One of my personal favorite things about Little Roots Play Café is how intentional Chelsea was about designing the space for mothers.
So many of us are balancing motherhood, work, and everything in between. It can feel nearly impossible to focus on work while also feeling present with our children.
Chelsea created a beautiful solution for that.
Inside the café there is a long countertop workspace that overlooks the play area. Moms can sit with their laptop, read a book, answer emails, or simply enjoy a quiet cup of coffee while their little ones play just a few feet away in a safe enclosed space.
You can still see your child. You can still interact with them. But you also have the freedom to focus for a moment without the constant feeling that you should be doing something else.
As a working mom myself, I absolutely love this part of the café. It removes so much of the guilt that often comes with trying to work while raising little ones. Chelsea truly created a space that supports both children and the mothers caring for them.
One of the things that makes Little Roots Play Café so special is the community Chelsea has created.
Families from Clarkston, Lake Orion, Waterford, and surrounding Oakland County communities gather here not just to play but to connect.
Throughout the year Little Roots hosts a variety of events that bring families together, including
• seasonal family events
• themed play experiences
• workshops and classes for parents
• community gatherings for local families
These events create opportunities for parents to meet other parents and for children to build friendships through play.
As a photographer who focuses on motherhood and family life, these are the moments I love capturing most.

While my primary work centers around birth photography, motherhood photography, and doula support, I also love working with mom owned businesses.
There is something incredibly meaningful about documenting spaces created by mothers who are building something for their own community.
Because I am a mother myself, I understand the heart behind businesses like Little Roots. That connection makes it easy to photograph the genuine moments that happen inside the space. Children playing. Parents connecting. The quiet beauty of everyday family life.
Over the past months I have been able to photograph
• the play space and environment at Little Roots
• families enjoying play sessions
• special community events hosted at the café
• the authentic moments that make this place feel so special
These images help tell the story of Little Roots and the community that gathers there.
Parents searching for things to do with toddlers in Clarkston Michigan often discover Little Roots because it offers something different from traditional indoor play spaces.
Families love it because it provides
• a calm environment for children
• a welcoming place for parents
• opportunities to build community
• a space designed with intention and care
It is the kind of place where families feel comfortable returning again and again.

Another thing that makes Little Roots Play Café unique is how Chelsea continues to use the space in creative ways to bring families together.
Throughout the year she hosts special events and collaborations that make the café feel even more like a community gathering place.
One example has been our pop up mini photo sessions inside the café. These sessions allow families to capture meaningful moments with their children in a relaxed environment that already feels familiar to them.
Earlier this year we hosted Valentine themed mini sessions inside Little Roots, which were such a sweet and joyful experience. Families were able to enjoy their play session while also capturing a few beautiful images with their little ones.
Chelsea is always thinking of new ways to use the space to support families and create memorable experiences for the community.
As someone who spends so much of my work documenting motherhood and family life, I love being able to collaborate with a mom owned business that values connection and community just as much as I do.
If you live in Clarkston Michigan or the surrounding Metro Detroit area, Little Roots Play Café is truly a gem for families with young children.
It is a space that celebrates childhood, connection, and community. Something that feels increasingly rare and incredibly valuable.
And as someone who spends so much of my work documenting motherhood and family life, it has been such an honor to help capture the story of this beautiful space and the families who gather there.
