So you’ve booked a boudoir session (or you’re still building up the courage to) and you’re looking for ways to ease your nerves. Let me reassure you, it’s totally normal to feel this way. While yes, you might be gifting these photographs to a special someone, at the end of the day this session is for you. This is your time to reconnect with yourself, to honor your journey, and to celebrate your body as it is right now.
As a Metro Detroit boudoir photographer, I’ve witnessed firsthand how transformational these sessions can be. I’ve also learned a few powerful ways to help bring out that gorgeous confidence that already lives inside you. Whether this is your first session or you’ve done it before, these tips will help you step into the studio feeling empowered, radiant, and ready.
You need to feel a connection to your photographer that goes beyond their portfolio. They could be incredibly talented, but if their personality doesn’t make you feel safe and seen, that’s a red flag. When you’re at your most vulnerable, you deserve to be supported by someone who truly gets it—who hypes you up, reassures you, and helps you feel amazing from the inside out.
Boudoir isn’t about fitting into someone else’s idea of “sexy.” It’s about embodying your version of it. Whether that’s a lacy robe, your partner’s oversized shirt, a cozy cardigan, or even nothing at all, it’s all about what makes you feel most yourself. Confidence comes when you feel good in your own skin—and the right wardrobe choices can help amplify that.
In the weeks leading up to your session, carve out time for self-care. Maybe it’s a fresh manicure and pedicure, a spa visit, or simply an evening bath with your favorite candle and playlist. These little rituals do wonders for your mood and mindset—and showing up nurtured will absolutely reflect in your photos.
This tip might feel bold, but hear me out: spending time nude in your own space can help you fall in love with your body’s movement, curves, and strength. Walk around naked. Lay in the sunlight. Stand in front of the mirror and just look. Watch how light and shadow dance across your skin. The more familiar you are with your body, the more confident you’ll feel in front of the lens.
It’s so easy to let our inner critic take the wheel. When you catch yourself picking apart your reflection or focusing on what you wish looked different, pause and remember your why. Maybe you’re doing this to celebrate a milestone, heal from something hard, or simply because you’re worth it. Let that why anchor you.
Music is such a powerful mood booster. I always recommend clients create a playlist that puts them in their element. Whether it’s sultry R&B, empowering pop, or calming acoustic vibes, your soundtrack sets the tone. Don’t be afraid to dance, move, or just vibe with it—it’ll help you relax and connect to the moment.
No one—and I mean no one—is perfect. Boudoir is about celebrating the woman you are right now. The softness that came with motherhood. The stretch marks that tell your story. The lines etched from laughter. This is real, raw beauty, and it’s worth honoring.
You do not need to know how to pose. A skilled boudoir photographer will guide you with care and intention. I’ll direct you into poses that flatter your body and bring out your natural energy. You might laugh, you might cry—it’s all part of the beautiful unfolding. Your only job is to show up and let yourself be seen.
What we say to ourselves matters. Try repeating affirmations before (and during!) your session to shift your energy. Some of my favorites are: “I am radiant.” “I am allowed to take up space.” “My body is powerful and worthy.” Pick a few that resonate with you and speak them with love.

You just did something bold and brave—you showed up, owned your space, and let your beauty be witnessed. That deserves celebration! Take yourself out for coffee, plan a solo dinner, or meet up with your girls. Let the energy from your session carry into the rest of your day (and week!)
Confidence isn’t just something we’re born with—it’s something we grow, nurture, and choose again and again. A boudoir session can be an incredibly affirming step in that journey. If your heart is pulling you toward one, I would be honored to walk alongside you.
