Boudoir Photography. What is it? You’ve probably heard this term but you’re not sure what it entails. Or, maybe because the idea of a boudoir session has piqued your interest—but you’re wanting to know more. Maybe you’re feeling a little nervous or unsure if it’s really for you.
As a Metro Detroit boudoir photographer, I’m here to reassure you: boudoir photography is for every woman, at every stage of life.
This guide will help you answer the question of what is boudoir. It will also help you to understand the beauty, vulnerability, and power that live within the boudoir experience.
The traditional definition of boudoir photography is “photography taken in a woman’s private room or bedroom.” But there’s so much more to it than that.
To me, boudoir is intimate and empowering photography that celebrates a woman’s most feminine and authentic self-expression.
It’s not just about sexy lingerie or seduction. It’s about letting yourself be seen—vulnerably, confidently—and allowing someone to turn that into art.
Women choose boudoir for all sorts of reasons, and often there’s a deeper meaning behind it. It might be to celebrate a milestone, honor a transformation, or embrace a new chapter.
Sometimes it’s for a partner. Sometimes it’s purely for themselves. And both are powerful reasons.
For couples, it can be a beautiful way to reconnect and reignite intimacy.
What better way to mark a moment than by being pampered, empowered, and photographed gorgeously?
When someone books a session with me, they’re guided through a full experience—not just a photo shoot.
It begins with a phone consultation where we connect, chat about your vision, and answer any questions.
You’ll then receive a detailed Welcome & Preparation Guide and a Client Questionnaire. These help set expectations and allow me to truly personalize your session.
Closer to your session date, we’ll hop on another call to cover any final details. On the day of your session, you’ll arrive early for professional hair and makeup.
Then the magic begins. I’ll guide you through poses and expressions that bring out your natural confidence and beauty. You don’t need to know how to model—that’s my job.
The best part? The reveal. We meet again, either virtually or in person, to view your images. This is when many of my clients get emotional—seeing themselves in a whole new light. I absolutely love watching women fall in love with themselves.
Boudoir is not pornographic. It’s not objectifying. And it’s not one-size-fits-all.
It can be as modest or revealing as you desire. I love the cozy vibe of oversized sweaters and shawls just as much as I adore the bold energy of full glam and lace.
It’s about how you want to feel—and how you want to be seen. This is your session, your way.
Boudoir is an intimate experience, so choosing the right photographer is important. You want someone you feel safe with—someone professional, warm, and empowering.
Here are a few things to consider:
If the answer to any of those is no, keep looking. You’ll know the photographer for you when you find them.
Also ask if they offer a full experience or simply a shoot. I personally don’t use a studio because I love the richness and variety of luxury hotels and Airbnbs. My session fee includes location, hair and makeup, and a guided experience from start to finish.
A boudoir session is a deeply personal and powerful journey. Unlike a family photo session, this is about you. Your story. Your beauty. Your strength.
You deserve to feel empowered by your femininity.
If any part of this resonates with you, I invite you to take the next step and connect with me for a phone chat. I’m based in Metro Detroit—but I do travel.
Take a look through my work, and don’t miss my current model call if you’re curious about diving in.
You are worthy of being seen. Let’s create something unforgettable together.
