When preparing for birth, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to invest in a childbirth education class. Whether you are hoping for an unmedicated birth or just want to feel more prepared, learning different techniques for managing labor can make a world of difference.
Now a days, there are so many different styles and types of birth preparation classes. Two of the most well-known classes are the Bradley Method and HypnoBirthing. While both focus on equipping you with tools for a calm and empowered birth, they take very different approaches. Let’s dive into what each class offers so you can decide which one best aligns with your birth goals.
Also called Husband Coached Childbirth, the Bradley Method is all about preparing you and your birth partner, typically your spouse or significant other, for an unmedicated, intervention-free birth. Developed by Dr Robert Bradley, this 12-week course is built on the belief that birth works best when a woman is fully informed, well-prepared, and supported by an actively involved birth coach.
Key Principles
– Partner-Coached Birth – Your birth partner plays a hands-on role in labor, helping you with relaxation techniques, comfort measures, and emotional support
– Nutrition and Exercise – A strong focus on maintaining a healthy pregnancy through diet and movement
– Understanding Labor Stages – You will learn how to recognize and work through the different phases of labor
– Pain Management Through Relaxation – The class teaches deep breathing, positioning, and mindset techniques to help you cope naturally
Who Should Consider the Bradley Method
– If you want your birth partner to be deeply involved in the process
– If you are planning an unmedicated, low-intervention birth in a hospital, birth center, or at home
– If you want a structured, detailed, and in-depth class this is a full 12-week commitment

If you are drawn to the idea of a peaceful, deeply relaxed birth experience, HypnoBirthing might be the perfect fit for you. Created by Marie Mongan, this method uses self-hypnosis, guided relaxation, and visualization techniques to help you enter a calm and fear-free state during labor. Instead of coaching through contractions, the focus is on surrendering to your body’s natural rhythm while staying in a deeply relaxed state.
Key Principles
– Deep Relaxation and Self-Hypnosis – Techniques to help you stay calm, focused, and in control during labor
– Breathing and Visualization – Tools to release fear and tension, allowing the body to work naturally
– Affirmations and Mindset Shifts – Learning to reframe birth as a positive, empowering experience
– Gentle and Peaceful Approach – Encourages a quiet, undisturbed birth environment
Who Should Consider HypnoBirthing
– If you want a calm, meditative birth experience
– If you experience anxiety or fear around birth and want tools to manage it
– If you prefer a shorter, more flexible course HypnoBirthing is typically 5 weeks
– If you want techniques that work for both medicated and unmedicated births

Both the Bradley Method and HypnoBirthing are fantastic options, but which one fits your vision for birth?
If you are someone who loves structure, coaching, and hands-on partner involvement, the Bradley Method is a great choice.
If you are looking for a gentle, meditative approach to birth, HypnoBirthing might be exactly what you need.
On a personal note, my husband and I did the Bradley Method Class with our first pregnancy. Before we learned about it, we knew we wanted him to be an active participant in my labor and birth. For us, we felt an immediate connection to the class. We loved that it was over a 10 week period. It truly brought us closer during our pregnancy. Our instructor was fantastic, so much so we hired one of her doulas for our birth.
At the end of the day, there’s nor right or wrong way to prepare for birth. You have to do what feels best to you. Investing in a quality childbirth class will not only help build your confidence, it will help you builder a deeper connection with your body.
Just as important as preparing for birth is capturing the journey itself. Your pregnancy and birth story deserve to be remembered. Let’s connect and create something truly meaningful.
